Daily Post:March 31,2008

Today I came to my internship exactly at 1 pm. xD

When I came I took my bag with baby carrots and I gave it to all of the horses. Baby carrots are better than big ones because each horse gets something. Invisible was mad at me because he thought that I didnt give him enough carrots. xD

Today me and Naser at first were helping Gallop. We were first holding the horses while the students were grooming them. My horse was trying to bite me and it didnt like for its girth to be tightened so it was moving and stuff. It was kind of scary.

After that I was just sidewalking since the girl on the horse was scared. Sidewalking is when you just walk near the horse with the person on it to make sure that the person wont fall down and also is so that the person on the horse will feel safer. I was suppose to lead the horse but Alicia said that since the girl is scared and the horse was not really listening she would lead it. Naser was leading Invisible.

Also Chris is back! He was injured by a horse while he was taking a pony out. (that is what I have heard).Chris is really nice, he always expains everything and like today he was asking me if I knew what the "donut" was and then he explained.

We went to get some food at 3pm. Sam Sam said that she will need our help at 3:30. When we came she didnt really need help.

So we helped Gallop by taking out two ponies out because 2 kids came to get lessons. I just helped take out Marshmallow. Then Sam Sam was calling Naser so I thought that he will be busy so I grabbed Chocolate Chip and groomed him. Sam Sam didnt really help so Naser came out and "helped" me. Then we decided to stay untill 4:30 so we took another pony to groom.

Today I have bought 2 other bags with baby carrots. Tomorrow I will feed the horses again. Oh and I think Chelsea is coming back. That is cool.:)

Meet Thumbelina, the world's smallest horse

Standing just 17 inches tall, she is never going to be a champion show-jumper.

In fact, the tiny mare is so small she would struggle to leap over a bucket.

But such things are of little concern for feisty Thumbelina who has just been officially recognised as the world's smallest horse.

The five-year-old received the title from the Guinness Book of Records after her astonished owners realised she was never going to grow any bigger.

She was born on a farm in America to a couple who specialise in breeding miniature horses.

These popular show horses usually weigh about 250lb and reach a height of 34 inches when they are fully grown.

But when Thumbelina was born, it was immediately clear she would never grow to this size.

At birth she weighed 8lb - the weight of many new-born babies - and eventually she grew to a mere 60lb.

Thumbelina's extraordinary size has been put down to dwarfism, which makes her a miniature of a miniature.

But despite this massive difference in size, it is feisty Thumbelina who rules the roost over the stallions and racehorses on her 150-acre farm.

'When she was born, she was so small we thought she wasn't going to make it,' said Michael Goessling, whose parents Kay and Paul bred the miniature horses.

'She weighed eight pounds when she came out and she looked very ill. We feared the worst.

'Because her legs are proportionally smaller than her body and her head, she has to wear orthopaedic fittings to straighten them a lot of the time.

'But we love her and wouldn't want her any other way.'

At a mere 17 inches tall (four hands), the mare measures up to the shins of the 'normal' horses in the paddock.

The Goessling family have bred miniature horses for the past 15 years on Goessling's Goose Creek Farm in St Louis, and these usually stand at 34 inches at the withers - the ridge between the two shoulder blades.

But the owners of the mini horse began to realise they may have bred a record-breaker when she stopped growing after a year.

'My parents have bred hundreds of miniature horses, but we have never had one as small as Thumbelina,' Mr Goessling said.

'She was just a complete fluke and we call her a mini mini.

'When she was young she found the dog kennels and decided she wanted to bed-in with the dogs, rather than with bigger horses.

'She spends all her time playing with the spaniels, but we have to try and stop her grazing on grass, because she is not allowed to eat too much.'

Thumbelina survives on a cup of grain and handful of hay, served twice-a-day.

Normal horses lives for about 35 years, but she is only likely to live up to the age of 17 because of her size.

She has the ability to become pregnant and give birth to foals, but her owners have decided not to allow this to happen.

Mr Goessling, 39, said: 'There could be complications during the pregnancy, so we think it is better to avoid the risks.

'And although we love Thumbelina, we do not think it is right that the gene which creates dwarfism in horses is carried on through future generations.'

The tiny mare has become sometime of a celebrity in her home town in America, but Mr Goessling insists they will never sell her, no matter what price is offered.

'She is too precious to us to sell,' he added. 'I think my parents would sell me before they part with Thumbelina.

'She has that special Wow factor, which you only get when you physically see how small she really is.'

Roost-a place for sitting, resting, or lodging.

How To Take Care Of Your Horse

I thought that pets are the animals who you have living with you in a house. I guess I was wring since it says that horses are pets. xD
Also I agree that horses have personalities because I have noticed it while working at the stables.
______

Horses are one of the most exciting pets to own and they make excellent companions. In fact, they are almost like people with their own personalities. However, taking care of your horse is a big responsibility and your horse must be cared for properly to keep it healthy and happy. To provide the appropriate level of care for your horse, you can imagine it as being a child of about 4 years old as this is about their level of mentality.

The first thing that you will need for your horse is a home. This may be a stable or a paddock. If you do not have somewhere large enough for your horse to live at your house, you may want to consider agistment or a place that rents out stables or land for horses to live. You will need to keep your horse’s home clean by removing his droppings daily for stables and weekly for pasture.

There are also many daily responsibilities that you will have as an owner. The first is feeding your horse. If you have it in a stable, you will need to feed it grains and chaff, as well as hay and make the stable comfortable for it by providing sawdust or hay for bedding. Horses also need large amounts of fresh clean drinking water. You will need to check the water you provide for your horse regularly during the day to make sure it has plenty and has not tipped it over or drank it all.

Horses also need to have regular exercise and plenty of love and attention. Make the time with your horse enjoyable by giving it a good brushing before and after you ride it. Offer affection and yummy treats such as apples or sugar cubes to encourage it to think of you as his friend. By making friends with your horse, it will try even harder to please you.

Do not forget to clean under your horses feet with a hoof pick daily, as well as before and after you ride it to make sure that it has not picked up a rock in his hoof as this will make it lame. You will also need to have his hooves trimmed by a farrier every 8 weeks to keep its feet from getting cracked, sore or overgrown.

Your horse will need to be wormed regularly and just like people horses need to have regular checkups from a vet, even if they are not sick, to make sure that they are healthy. If you have any concerns about your horse or what to feed it or how often, your vet will also be able to help you.

During winter, you may need to provide a rug for your horse, especially if the winter months are particularly cold. Horses that are in stables will also need to have rugs for the night as they can not move around to keep warm.

As you have read, one of the most important things that you will need is time. The time needed to take care of your horse properly and train it to do the things that you want it to do. When you are able to be patient and gentle with your horse, it will be the best friend that you ever had.

Paddock(Rus.выгул, пастбище)-a small, usually enclosed field near a stable or barn for pasturing or exercising animals.

Pasture(Rus.пастбище)-an area covered with grass or other plants used or suitable for the grazing of livestock; grassland.

Chaff-the husks of grains and grasses that are separated during threshing.

Trim(Rus.подравнивать)-to cut the edges or ends of (something) in order to make it shorter and/or neat

Today during Internship Seminar I was helping Gabby since mr.Andrew didn't let me have a computer since I am done with everything. I helped Gabby put pictures in her blog and to put the blog that was somewhere not in posting space into a post.

Also today ms.Carol was not here so we didn't have the internship thing during SSR time, so it was like we missed another friday. I also need to get new time sheets.

Today when we came to the stables Sam Sam said that she will give us each a lesson for about 20 minutes but first one of the horses will have to exercise.

We went to prospect parc with 2 horses. Naser was leading Invisible. When we came to the ring we were just chatting and waiting until Sam Sam will be done. Then I was the fisrt one to get the lesson.

For about 26 minutes I was on Invisible and Sam Sam was telling me how to sit on the horse correctly, stop it and how to turn it. Then Trofim was riding and I was leading the horse. (Untill the turning part,Naser was leading my horse to until I was doing turning so I was by myself). While Trofim was on the horse and I was leading it, Naser was holding Sam Sams horse.

After Trofim was done Sam Sam told me to lead the horse again but I felt sick so I was just holding the other horse. When we went back there were some problems at the street with cars because horses were getting scared. :)

Overall it was cool today since we got to ride the horse. It was my 3rd time riding 1 and + it was the same horse for the 3rd time.:)

Today I didnt go to my internship and thats why I went there on friday.

Me and the service learning "crew" were leaving at 1pm to go to a day care to read to little kids. So I had like an hour before we would go.

At first I saw Shalom and Diana C. just wondering around the school because their mentor told them not to come so they were working in school. We were looking for computers so that they could work and so that I can chack my blog and stuff. Then while looking for a computer ms.Carol told me that she has some work for me and since I had nothing to do and I am a very helpful person (as it says in Duanas blog) I agreed.

Fisrt I was putting grades of the students into the computer. Then when I was done I ms.Carol told me if I could make copies for the class so she showed me how and I made it.

After that I was just sitting in teachers launch and annoying Diana with Shalom.Checked my blog and read my new comments xD Um then I went to service learning.

Service learning for me was kind of boring today. First of all because I dont really like working with kids. They are annoying. xD Well I only can put up with my 4 year old niece.

First we came and we were waiting for the kids to wake up, so we were just chatting. Then we got into the rooms where the kids were. I was with Kristina. There were about 15 kids in that room. After they ate Kristina was reading a book to them and showing pictures and I was just listening. Then we had some coloring papers so they were coloring stuff. I was with a little kid who was sitting next to me and I was helping him to color. Well and then we left to go home.

So it was not that exciting, and I missed Butterscotch and other horsies :(

And I know this has nothing to do with my internship, but oh well, at least has something to do with schoo..)))

Picture of kids listening to Kristina reading.

Hello invisible creatures who read this blog. xD

Chelsea told me on friday that she would not be at the stables for a week or so. Today another girl (I still dont remember the name) was telling us what to do. Also Johny [I think xD] was telling us what to do.

At first we were grooming 2 horses. Then we were just helping a little to Gallop making the stuff in the ring even. I was just watching and "supervising". Then Trofim and Naser were putting some stuff where it's suppose to be xDDD I was just sitting with Chocolate Chip and watchin again, because they didnt like how I was doing it.

After [or before, not sure] that me and Naser were cleaning horses "plates" where they have their food. Then each of us got a pony, I got Chocolate Chip <3 align="center">

At 3 me and Naser went to the store to get some food and Trofim was still grooming his pony because it had too much fur. Then we came ate and went home.

Today I went to my internship. I left my house at about 1:10pm and I was at my internship at 1:30pm because I tried to take Q train uptown to Church Ave instead of going downtown to Coney Island and changing to F train.

There was a birthday party for one little girl and her 4 friends. Since there was not enough people I was one of the people who was leading while a little girl was on. I was kind of scared. It was my first time when I was leading the horse with someone on it,especially when that someone was really young. I also had the biggest horse,Margaurite.

It was like a 30 minute ride for the girls. I had to help the little girl who was on the horse that I was leading to move it right or left and telling her how to do it. Also I had to hold her when she was doing "around the world". It is when you turn (make a circle) while you are on the horse.

When we came a man who was I think birthday girls dad (I'm not sure) , he helped me by taking the girl from the horse.

Then I had to put the horse back, losen its girth and take off the bridle. After I did that I took the girl that was on the horse, she had 2 carrots and we went to feed the horsie. She was kind of scared :)) Then Chelsea took my favorite pony out (Butter Scotch) and all the kids started to pay attention to it.)

After we came back I didnt do much,I was just standing there. Then a man came with other two girls who were even smaller. He came for pony rides and Chelsea told me that I will do it and told me to take Smorse out. I took him out and first went 2 times up and down the block with one girl then the same with the other. I also had to look that they were holding with two hands.

So today was a pretty cool day since I learned new things. I finally had an experience leading horses with people on them.:)

Today we were late to our internship because of the L train. When we came and changed we were just sitting on the chairs outside doing nothing. Then there were two cars and either of them had to move in order for the other one to pass. Noone wanted to back up so they were both just standing and facing each other. Then the drivers were arquing. There was a red and a blue car. We thought that the blue one shpuld move. And it did.

Then we found some "ancient" string instrunment that was laying on the ground near the construction. We were throwing rocks at it that way "playing" the music. xD

After that we went to groom some horses. We finished and warent doing anything else exapt fighting xD and then we went home at 4.

So today we didnt really do much.Tomorrow I will probably go to my internship. But I am not sure at what time since my mentor was not there today.

Now I have to thing of words that I have learned at my internship, and I dont know any.

Interesting Horse Facts

  • One of the first horses was called a Hyracotherium. It lived about 50 million years ago and was as tall as a fox. It had toes! This horse changed over millions of years to become a modern horse.
  • Camargue horses are completely white as adults. Their babies are pure black when they are born.
  • There is a breed of horse from Russia called Akhal-Teke. It can go for days without food or water.
  • You measure a horse's height in hands. Each hand equals four inches. If you say a horse is 16.2 hands high, the 2 stands for 2 fingers.
  • You can tell how old a horse is by how many teeth it has. A horse gets all of its teeth by the time it is five years old. After that, they just get longer.
  • A female horse is called a mare. In the wild it is the mare that decides when the herd moves on to another spot to find food.
  • A male horse is called a stallion. Usually only one stallion will stay with a herd.
  • Any marking on a horse's forehead is called a star, even if it is not shaped like a star.
  • Horses and ponies feel safer when they are in a herd.
  • Mustangs are one of the few breeds of horses that live wild in North America. They are related to the horses that the Spanish explorers brought to North America 400 years ago.
  • Horses can communicate how they are feeling by their facial expressions. They use their ears, nostrils, and eyes to show their moods. Beware of a horse that has flared nostrils and their ears back. That means it might attack!
  • A hoof is like a fingernail. It is always growing and needs to be clipped so that it won't be uncomfortable for the horse.
  • A farrier is a person who makes horse shoes and fits them on your horse. They also clip hooves to keep them from getting overgrown.
  • A horse can move in four ways: walk, trot, canter, and gallop. A gallop is the fastest gait.

Today me, Trofim and Naser groomed 2 ponies. Then walked them while taking pictures since we need slide shows for the blogs. After that we went to help Gallop, but there was nothing really to help with. So we ate some pizza that was there. Then we were pouring water into buckets for horses. Trofim got me wet and I was cold.

We went for a break to get some food. I got a bag of carrots again. Gave it to all the horses. Me,Trofim and Naser then decided to stay untill 5,so we went home at 5.

On friday I am planning to go to my internship so that I can go to Service learning next Tuesday.

Right now I will make a picture slide show from today and post it here. Also I have no idea where all the pictures are (and all the good ones) but they vanished from the memory card. All the stupid ones are left..:(( Lately I have problems with blog and stuff for it :( I feel sad now,so sad

Today I came to my internship, changed and then Sam Sam [?] told us (Me,Naser and Trofim) to groom 4 horses-Emma,Margaurite [?],Spin Doctor and Katie. All of those horses are big, they are not ponies and mostly we groom ponies. Naser and Trofim were grooming Margaurite and I was grooming Emma by my self. At fisrt I thought that she was mean xD But she is a nice horse. Then I was grooming Katie (my name xD) and I am not sure what she did but she did something that might of hurt me, but my mentor saw it and told me just to get away from me. He said that the horse didnt do it because it was mad, and it tried like to bear hug me. Well I dont know. Naser and Trofim ofcourse were grooming Spinny (Spin Doctor).

After we groomed all 4 horses and put them back we had a break to go get some food. I was all in horse hair and I couldnt get rid of it xD... At the store I also got a bag of carrots for the ponies.

When we came back and after we ate me and Naser were taking ponies out and grooming them. We were grooming them out, and we usually do it outside but today was also really sunny and warm. After we groomed them we were walking them and also before the walk I gave them carrots. When I walked with my favorite pony,Butter Scotch I gave the last carrot to him and then he wanted more so he was stopping when I was walkin him and would smell me if I had more carrots.

Well after that Trofim and Naser were putting sattle on Marshmallow. After they were done we changed and went home.:)

And since my phone was dead I didnt get a chance to get a any pictures.

Third Week Assignment

Photobucket
  • Describe one significant activity or project that you have completed or are working on currently.
One significant activity that I did at my internship was to ride a horse. I was really excited to try and do it on my own without anyone holding the horse. I was riding a horse named Invisible that I already rode once, but not on my own.
When you are on the horse you are suppose to pay attention to your feet , eyes and hands. Your hills should be down all the time and your hands on a specific range.
It was really hard for me to do all of it at once. But I really tried my best to do it and not to fall off especially when the horse was running. I would always stare at horses head and not where I want to go. But believe me it was hard not too look at the horse because for me when I didnt look I for some reason felt unsafe. I felt that I would just fall off it.
Also when I would press on the horse with my legs so that it would move, my hills would start to go up and Chelsea who teached me would always correct me. My hands would also always be wide and not how they are suppose to be.
Also it was pretty scary when the horse would move and I would feel everything. The horse that I was riding always likes to kick and I would feel it kicking its leg.
When I would look at other people there riding a horse and if they couldnt do something I would always think that it is easy. I thought to my self "How could day not do the right thing if it is so easy". Well it only looked easy to me.
Alicia from Gallop told me that when I ride more I will get used to it and everything will be easy for me. Well I hope so.

Today I didnt come to school but I did go to my internship. (How could I miss it? xD)..I woke up at 12pm and I got ready really quickly,I thought that I will be late, but I was there at 12:59pm xD

When I came only Naser was there. He said that Trofim didnt feel like coming so he just went home. So it was just me and Naser.

We were sitting on the chairs outside and watching horses being groomed. Today was kind of warm and sunny so it was OK . We were just sitting and doing nothing until (apprx) 3pm. Then we got some ponies and were grooming them and after that walking up and down the block with them.

As you can see today was kind of boring.:(

Oh and mr.Andrew I didnt find anything about the races, I dont know the names and where they will happen + I am not that interested in the race. Im planing to be a vet, noty a racer xDD . And I hope that you will give us another assignment.:)Thanks.

4 ponies,Kate and 3 bags of carrots xD
. Today 4 ponies were just hanging around and eating hay. I had 3 bags of carrots with me. I gave it to 2 of the ponies who came up to me and I had to go inside to give it to the other 2. Well after I tried to get out the first 2 ponies ate their carrot already. So besically I got "attacked" by ponies. My jacket was all wet and dirty xD because my favorite pony Butter Scotch was biting me so that I can give him more carrots.

Well this happened when I just came. But then me,Trofim and Naser were grooming big horses. After we went to eat and came back we got 2 ponies out, Butter Scotch and Chocolate Chip. First we groomed them,I was grooming Butter Scotch and Trofim with Naser were grooming Chip.

After that Chelsea was teaching us how to put a sattle on.

So what did I learn today?
  • How to put a sattle on a pony :)

Second Week Assignment Part 2

Photobucket
  • What did you do during your second week?

Well you can read my daily blogs to find out more. But I mostly did the same thing as during the first week. Some of the new things were :

  1. Rode a horse
  2. Got a lesson on how to ride a horse
  3. Met more people
  4. Missed my internship (Missed as a feeling)
  5. Got to watch a photoshoot

Well the rest is actually pretty much the same

  • How was it different than the first week?

Well I named the different things that happened during the second week. But one thing definately that changed is that I feel more comfortable at my internship now. And everyday I become more comfortable, get to know the people more.

  • What is something that you really like about the internship?

I LOVE almost everything in my internship.Im not going to say what I dont like because that is the next question. Some things that I really like is to ride a horse even though it is pretty difficult, to groom ponies or walk them up and down the block and feeding horses with carrots or cookies. Those are the things I do the most and I like the the most. (Well exapt the carrot part). And I just like my internship because I would like my work to be similar to it since for me its not really like a job, its just a thing I love to do and its important to do what you love and love what you do.

  • What is something you dislike about the internship?

Some things that I dislike that sometimes we (Me,Trofim and Naser) just have to stand in corners and watch out if something happens, like if someone will fall down the horse, etc. But that mostly happened the first week.

  • Who else's blog have your read and commented on?

Arma = ihsjisarmah.blogspot.com,Arthur = ihsjisarthurv.blogspot.com,Azib = ihsjisazibs.blogspot.com,Claudia = ihsjisclaudiaf.blogspot.com,Diana C. = ihsjisdianac.blogspot.com,Dima = ihsjisdimap.blogspot.com,Emmanuel = emmanuel-l.blogspot.com,Gabby = ihsjisgabbyp.blogspot.com,Gally = ihsjisgallyd.blogspot.com,Giselle = ihsjisgisellec.blogspot.com,John = ihsjisjohnc.blogspot.com,Juan = ihsjisjuant.blogspot.com,Katrina = ihsjiskatrinal.blogspot.com,Kelvin = ihsjiskelvinr.blogspot.com,Kermide = ihsjiskermideb.blogspot.com,Marc-Henry = ihsjismarchenryj.blogspot.com,Marina = ihsjismarinal.blogspot.com,Paco = ihsjispacot.blogspot.com,Peterson = ihsjispetersonp.blogspot.com,Shalom = ihsjisahoefag.blogspot.com,Syira = ihsjissyiram.blogspot.com,Waqar = ihsjiswaqars.blogspot.com,Yuri = ihsjisyurig.blogspot.com

Well that would mean that I have read everyones blog and commented it. Artur didnt have the assignment done but I still commented.

I am done with the assignment we were suppose to do. I missed these blog entries for 3 days. Too bad that tomorrow wont be another one. Oh well.

Today at the internship there were only me and Trofim because Naser didnt come. We didnt do much. When people came for lessons me and Trofim were just holding the horses so that will get groomed.

Then me and Trofim went to get some food. We ate and then Ben told Trofim to go get some coffee for him. We went to get it and when we came back we were grooming Marshmallow. Horses name is Marshmallow because it is all white. Then after we groomed Marshmallow I went to say bye to horsies. When I came to Dave he was biting my sleeve. Then my cheek was all wet because Margareute "kissed" it. She is the horse that kisses Photobucket

Well and then I went home. :) OMG I will miss the horsies tomorrow :(

So that is my blog for today, Mr.Andrei you told me to write daily blogs even if the same things are happening. So there you are.

Sorry no pictures for today :(

(By the way, I am not sure if the names that I wrote are spelled right)

Well today nothing really happened. Me and Trofim came to the stables without Naser because Naser didn't come to school. But then it turned out that he came to the stables at 12.

We groomed some big horses. I groomed Invisible. Also all 3 of us were riding horses by our self. Chelsea gave us a lesson.

It was my first time riding a horse without anyone holding. (And I rode horses only 2 times-Today and Monday.)I was really scared. But also it was hard for me because I needed to look to where I want to go, and I couldnt. Also I needed to pay attention to my hands and feet and I found that pretty hard.:)

I wanted to put pictures of Trofim and Naser riding but for some reason I cannot upload them to my computer from my camera. :(
Photobucket

Well anyway I hope that it will be fun tomorrow :)

I finally uploaded couple of pictures with naser and Trofim on horses. Theres none with me since noone took it for me :(

Hallo to anyone who is reading this.
So today we pretty much did everything that we always do: walked ponies, groomed horses and ponies. Also there was a photoshoot, like a real one , with a professional photographer and a model. So we were watching how it went. Chelsea said that today we would ride one of the horses but since there was a photoshoot we didnt get to. So hopefully we will tomorrow.

Also I put some pictures of horses (not from my internship) on the side of my blog to make it nicer. Well I think it is better now. And I changed the design because I think it will look better on school computers, since they dont sow the background image & theres none here.

Some horses today got their shoes changed, I think. So I was also watching that while I was eating. So that is something new:)

Tomorrow will be the last internship on this week, and I will miss it on friday and the weekedns. I seriously missed the horses and grooming them over the last weekend. But at least I am excited about the trip to Philadelphia which I think is on Friday.[?] (Mr andrew is it on friday? If you know)

Well ok I dont know what else to write so I will post some pictures from today since mr.Andrew told me too :)) The pictures are from my cellphone, because I dont take my camera. Probably tomorrow I will. But anyway my camera doesnt have good quality anyway. xD

Trofim was walking this pony.

This is the view when you come inside the Stables. And any of these feet can kick you. Nice :)))

This pony has asthma :( So it cannot eat hay.

Me and pony that we always groom. It never gives me its right back foot to clean. Only if you give it a cookie xDD His name is something like Smorse. I am not sure if its it or if that is how you spell it.

This is Invisible. This is the horse that I was riding on Monday.:) Naser was grooming it today.
