The End of the First Week of Internships

  • What is it?

horse

My internship site is Kensington Stables.

  • What kind of business is it and what kind of work do the professionals do there?

It is a stable with horses in it. People come there to ride horses, also they come to volunteer to help around like grooming horses as well as some people come and feed horses with carrots ( and horses like it ).

Professionals at the stables do all the things that volunteers do plus teaching people like us who intern there how to groom horses, also they help people to ride horses if they dont know how to or just provide them with security in case something happens.

  • Where is it?

Kensington Stables are located near Prospect Park on 51 Caton Place. To get there I take 3 trains. First I take the L train from school to Broadway Junction and change to A where I stop at Jay Street. At Jay Street I take the F train to Ft-Hamilton and walk to the stables.

  • Tell a little about your mentor.

My mentors name is Walker but he is not always in the stables so some onther people help him out. And that is actually pretty cool because we(Trofim,Naser and me) get to work with more people. But when Walker is there he helps us when we need help like when we had problems with cleaning horses feet he helped us out. Also he was telling us to walk ponies up and down the block which I liked to do.

  • What happened on the first day?

On the first day we came at around 12:45 to the stables and then we were waiting for the people from Gallop to come. After they came we were working with Alicia. We were picking up trash around the stables, then we were standing in the corners while people were riding the horses, and if something would happen we would be there to help. Then we groomed a pony, but at that time we still didnt really know how to do it. (Chelsea teached us on the second day.)

  • What kinds of things have you done so far?
  1. Groom horses/ponies.
  2. Carry begs with wood bedding. [?]
  3. Walk ponies.
  4. Met new people.
  5. My jacket was licked and bitten by ponies. xD
  6. Learned some names of horses.
  7. Fed horses with carrots.
  8. Rode a horse. (UPDATE 03/03)
  • What were some of the highlights of the first week? (Memorable moments, cool things...)

My favorite thing to do was groom horses and just pet them. Also I liked walking the ponies. The most favorite thing to do is giving carrots to horses because then they become all active and nice to you and its just plesant to do. Another thing that I liked was watching horses and ponies just run around together and do silly things.

And the Internship is getting more interesting and better every day.:)

  • When do you leave school?

I leave school at approximately 11:45 am and I dont really have time to eat my lunch.

  • How long does it take you to get to your internship?

Well we get to the train at like 12 pm (we are already in the train) and we come to the internship at about 12:50 pm, so it takes us around 40-50 minutes to get there.

  • When do you arrive at home?

I leave the stables at apprx. 4:20 pm (because we wait for Trofim to change) and I get home somewhere it between 5:10 pm and 5:30 pm. Depends when my trains come. (I take 2,F and then Q)

  • What is your schedule? (What days do you work and for how long each day?)

I work all 4 days. (Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday, and Thursday) I work from 1 pm to 4 pm, sometimes untill 4:30 pm.

  • Who are the two people that can sign your time card? (Your mentor and the additional person)

It is always different people. Like now the 4 signatures I've got are all from 4 different people, because not all people come everyday.

February 15 questions.

  • Tell us a little about yourself
    horse

Hi I am Kate and I am from Belarus which is located in Europe. I speak Russian and English. I also tried learning German but since I dont have any German friends or anyone who speaks German its really hard for me to learn it. I am a junior at International High School@KCC. I am 16 years old. I live in Brooklyn,NY for 4 years. I like to read Harry Potter books, chat on Myspace, listen to music like Tokio Hotel and hang out with my friends. I will have an internship at a stable with horses. I chose it because I really love animals.

  • What did you learn in the junior internship seminar class up to this point?

I have learned a lot of things about college and we were searching for different internships. Also I've learned how to write a resume and how to be prepared for the interview. We searched different types of jobs, made posters with the details of those jobs and then presented it to the class. Another thing that we had in the internship seminar is that students from another International High School came and were telling us about their internships. That kind of helped because they helped me to know what to expect.

  • What is your greatest fear about internship?

I dont really have any fears about my internship. Maybe one thing is getting late, because I dont like being late and especially to an internship.

  • What is your greatest hope for the internship?

My greatest hope for the internship is to meet new people, learn the behavior of horses. Get a job experiance. Also maybe try to ride a horse if it is allowed for me there.

  • What is your internship site and what are you going to do there? If you do not know, what do you think you will be doing?

My internship is at Kensington Stables. I will be working with horses. Also I will be teached how to supervise someone on a horse and what to do if a hoprse becomes agressive.

  • What will you miss about going to high school as you normally did for the last 2.5 years?

I will definately miss all the free time that I have right now. Also I will miss my teachers and my classmates or friends that are not even in 11th grade yet and I will see them less.
